Black smoke was rising from a vent into the sky, evoking cinematic imagery in the minds of onlookers. He describes this moment: “I felt like a monster was supposed to emerge from this smoke.”

This image was captured in 2011 or 2012, when the photographer had just moved to Los Angeles. He recalls walking in downtown when he suddenly came across this strange phenomenon. The photographer, who grew up in San Jose, points out the differences between this city and Los Angeles. He says: “San Jose is a large suburb and has no urban feel. But Los Angeles is a mix of different places. Just a 15-minute drive can take you to a completely different environment, whether it’s the ocean or the mountains.”
He notes the beauty and complexities of this city, adding: “Los Angeles has a strange awareness if you let it take you. I always have a strange urge to get in the car and head towards the unknown.”
