New research conducted by researchers at Flinders University in Australia has raised a serious alarm about public health. These researchers, by reviewing 22 different studies, concluded that flushing a toilet not only releases water but can also aerosolize very fine pathogenic particles that may enter people's respiratory space.
Dangerous Water Flow
The study found that the strong and turbulent water flow during toilet flushing can propel fine water droplets to heights above the toilet bowl. These droplets can carry microbes and pathogens and can easily be transferred to public spaces. In other words, no one is safe from the dangers posed by a simple toilet flush.
Analyses indicate that in enclosed and dimly lit environments, the likelihood of disease transmission via these particles increases. Considering that many of us use toilets on a daily basis, these findings could lead to changes in our hygiene behaviors.
Health Implications
This research has gained particular importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that viruses and bacteria can easily be transmitted through the air, the conclusions of this study raise new concerns about hygiene in public and private spaces. It seems that the time has come to pay more attention to the hygiene of toilets and the methods of using them.
Researchers emphasize that to reduce the risks associated with this phenomenon, hygienic practices such as covering toilets before flushing and using proper ventilation in enclosed spaces should be adopted.
