At the height of the BRICS summit taking place in New Delhi, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, vocally and clearly called for the immediate reform of the United Nations Security Council. He emphasized the need for equal participation of Global South countries in the process of formulating international rules and stated that these reforms can no longer be postponed.
Challenges of the Security Council and the Voice of Developing Countries
Modi pointed out that the Security Council disproportionately represents developed countries, highlighting the challenges within this institution and noting that this outdated structure is no longer accountable. He stressed that developing countries must play a greater role in global decision-making, which requires reforms in the Security Council.
The Prime Minister of India also urged BRICS member countries to unite and become a single voice against global challenges. He added, "We must be accountable in the face of common challenges, including climate change, terrorism, and economic inequalities, and this is only possible with a fair international structure."
Emphasis on Global Justice
Modi continued his remarks by referring to the necessity of establishing a fair and balanced global system and emphasized the need to address the requirements of developing countries. He believes that if these changes are not made in the Security Council, Global South countries will not be able to effectively participate in solving global issues.
These remarks by Modi come at a time when many countries are concerned about the current state of the Security Council and believe that this institution needs fundamental changes. Given global developments and multiple crises, reforming the Security Council may appear as an urgent necessity.
