In recent years, after experiencing two record-breaking hot summers, many homeowners in Britain have encountered a new crisis known as "subsidence." Henry Biggs, 49, from Stroud in Gloucestershire, is one of those individuals whose home walls have developed deep cracks, causing him significant concern.
Cracks that Reach into Another Room
Henry says: "We have one wall that has a large, thick crack in it, and we can easily look through to the other room; you can easily stick your fingers in it, and pieces of plaster are falling off." He and his wife noticed the cracks in their family home in June 2025, a few months after purchasing it.
Given these issues, they decided to file an insurance claim for subsidence. Their claim was approved by their insurer, Admiral, in the spring of last year. Interestingly, monitoring devices were only recently installed, about a year after the initial request, and Henry has no idea when repairs will take place.
Insurers' Challenges Against Subsidence
This subsidence crisis poses a significant challenge not only for homeowners but also for insurance companies. With the rising number of claims for damages caused by subsidence, insurers are inevitably forced to reassess their policies. Will they be able to manage this volume of damage? That is a question that time will answer.
