Hunger can be associated with mood changes such as irritability and anger. This state, described in English as "Hangry," indicates the connection between hunger and bad temper. Studies have shown that hunger is not only related to low blood sugar, but other factors also play a role in mood changes.
The Connection Between Hunger and Mood Changes
A study examining the daily experiences of 64 individuals over 21 days found that feelings of hunger are more associated with increased anger and irritability and decreased feelings of pleasure. This connection remained even when considering factors such as age, gender, and personality traits. Additionally, a more recent study involving 90 healthy individuals over four weeks showed that hunger is associated with lower mood.

Why Is Concentration Harder?
Hunger can also be accompanied by feelings of fatigue and decreased energy. In healthy individuals, the body helps maintain blood sugar levels using glycogen stores and glucose production in the liver. Therefore, going a few hours without food usually does not mean a dangerous lack of glucose. While a real drop in blood sugar can cause symptoms such as shaking, palpitations, and confusion, ordinary hunger only leads to mood changes.
When you are hungry, your attention is more focused on the need for food, and your tolerance for unpleasant stimuli decreases. For this reason, a common occurrence may seem more annoying when you are hungry.
How to Manage Hunger?
To control hunger, it is better to have meals that include protein, quality carbohydrates, vegetables, and fruits. This combination typically creates a more sustainable feeling of fullness and balanced nutrition. Additionally, if an individual notices that long gaps between meals lead to irritability or decreased energy, adjusting meal timing can be a suitable solution.
Hunger can affect mood, but that does not mean that every bad mood is due to low blood sugar. In many individuals, a combination of hunger feelings, physical condition, and mental reactions to this state can change mood. Ultimately, if someone frequently experiences severe symptoms such as shaking or confusion along with hunger, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
