Researchers reported that approximately 66% of lung cancer patients had detectable microplastics in samples taken from their lungs, compared to 46% of individuals without lung cancer. These findings indicate a concerning link between microplastics and lung cancer.

Key Findings of the Study

According to researchers, lung cancer patients are twice as likely to have heavier burdens of microplastics in their lungs. Dr. Lias Dimas, a respiratory specialist from University College Dublin, believes these results indicate that inhalable microplastics are found in human lungs more than previously thought. Dimas also stated that reducing plastic pollution could have benefits beyond human health.

Research Method and Study Details

In this study, researchers selected 100 patients who underwent bronchoscopy to investigate lung symptoms at Larissa University Hospital in Greece. Bronchoscopy involves inserting a thin flexible tube into the lungs for examination and sampling. Additionally, patients underwent lung washing, where a saline solution is used to wash a portion of the lungs.

Of the 100 patients, 50 later developed lung cancer. Analysis showed that 70% of patients overall had detectable microplastics in the lung wash fluid or lung tissue samples. A higher number of lung cancer patients had detectable microplastics in their lung wash samples and had a higher overall microplastic burden compared to individuals without cancer.

Researchers found that individuals with heavier microplastic burdens are twice as likely to be exposed to lung tumors. This study indicates that we breathe in microplastics through the air, and they accumulate in our lungs.

Future Challenges and Further Research

According to researchers, more studies are needed to fully understand the potential role of microplastics in lung diseases, including cancer. The most common types of plastics found in the lungs include polypropylene and polyethylene, which are used in everyday products.

Dimas emphasized that this type of study cannot definitively say why more microplastics are found in lung cancer patient samples. However, microplastics may play a role in inflammation or other biological processes that could lead to diseases like cancer.

These findings raise important questions for future research, and the research team is analyzing samples from patients with lung diseases to gain a better understanding of the role of microplastics in lung scarring and disease progression.
