A new study shows that in a low-calorie diet with a large breakfast and a small dinner, both high-fiber and high-protein breakfasts led to weight loss. This research, conducted on 19 overweight or obese individuals, indicates that each of these two types of breakfasts has its own specific benefits.

Research Details

In this study, participants experienced two 28-day dietary regimens. One of these regimens was based on fiber and the other was designed around protein. In both diets, 45% of daily energy was consumed in the morning, 35% at midday, and only 20% at dinner. The results showed that individuals in the high-fiber diet lost an average of 4.87 kilograms, while those in the high-protein diet lost 3.87 kilograms.

Benefits of Different Breakfasts

However, the difference between these two diets is not limited to weight loss. The high-fiber breakfast produced more favorable changes in gut microbes. The levels of certain bacteria known to be beneficial for gut health, including bifidobacteria and butyrate-producing bacteria, increased. In contrast, the high-protein breakfast performed better in appetite control, with consumers feeling fuller after eating it and having a lower tendency to eat more.

Nevertheless, this study alone cannot prove that higher-calorie breakfasts definitely lead to weight loss. The important point is that both dietary programs were designed to create an energy deficit, and weight loss cannot be attributed solely to the larger and higher-calorie breakfast. Additionally, the number of participants was only 19, and each diet lasted four weeks.

Need for Further Research

The results of this research suggest that the type of breakfast may be significant. More protein may help control hunger, and more fiber could have benefits for the gut microbiome. To determine how much this dietary pattern helps with weight control in the long term, larger and longer studies are needed.
