The price of potatoes in Tehran's Grand Fruit and Vegetable Market has increased due to a 50% reduction in supply, with the wholesale price of this product reaching 70,000 to 85,000 tomans per kilogram.

Increase in Prices of Potatoes and Onions

According to recent reports, the price of potatoes compared to last week (September 7 to 13) increased from a floor price of 55,000 tomans to 70,000 tomans and from a premium rate of 75,000 tomans to 85,000 tomans. This price increase is recorded at 27.3% for the floor price and 13.3% for the premium type of this product.

In addition to potatoes, the price of onions has also increased, rising from 35,000 tomans per kilogram to 50,000 tomans. The maximum price of onions has increased from 80,000 tomans to 90,000 tomans, indicating a 42.9% increase in the floor price and a 12.5% increase in the premium rate of this product.

Reduction in Supply and Its Consequences

Akbar Yavari, the head of the Tehran Fruit Sellers Union, explained the reasons for the increase in potato prices, stating that the supply of this product has significantly decreased due to favorable weather and reduced harvests by farmers. He added: "Tehran province requires about 600,000 tons of potatoes daily, which has recently decreased to 300,000 tons." According to forecasts, it is expected that potato farmers will start harvesting this product by November, which may stabilize prices.

Yavari also emphasized the need for oversight on the distribution of agricultural products from the source, highlighting the increase in production costs compared to last year. He called for the Ministry of Agriculture to take timely measures for stockpiling to manage the market during price fluctuations.

Given the ban on the export of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes until the end of the year, the head of the fruit sellers union stated that it is not logical for prices to continue to rise.
