The birth of a newborn marks the beginning of a new phase in a mother's life; a phase that can be filled with love and excitement, but alongside these, fatigue, anxiety, physical changes, and psychological pressures may also exist. Nasrin Iqdar, a clinical psychologist, discussed the role of those around new mothers in providing support and highlighted their common mistakes in an interview.
The Responsibility of Those Around and Its Impact on the Mother's Mental Health
Iqdar pointed out the importance of social support for new mothers in this interview, stating: "No mother improves in a vacuum, and the circle of those around her, especially her spouse and family, plays a vital role in this journey." She emphasized that the heavy burden of these days should not be shouldered alone, and daily responsibilities should be properly divided.

This clinical psychologist also referred to postpartum depression, saying: "Postpartum depression is neither a sign of weakness nor does it mean that a mother is incapable of fulfilling her maternal role. This condition is related to mental health and is completely treatable." She noted that if a mother feels unwell, she should not ignore the symptoms she is experiencing.
Sentences to Avoid Saying
Iqdar warned that sometimes those around new mothers say sentences with good intentions that have the opposite effect and increase their feelings of inadequacy. For example, sentences like "Think positively" or "Be strong for your baby" should give way to listening to the mother's words. She said: "We should remind her that she is not alone and does not have to do everything by herself."
In conclusion, Iqdar referred to the unbreakable bond between the mother's well-being and the baby's future, stating: "Caring for the mother is a crucial part of caring for the newborn. A mother who is supported physically and mentally has more opportunities to rest and, consequently, can establish a better emotional connection with the newborn." This point shows that attention to the mother's mental health directly impacts the newborn's health.
