The mother's brain undergoes significant changes during pregnancy, leading to a reorganization of its structure and function. These changes are such that researchers can observe them using brain imaging.

Brain Changes During Pregnancy

Pregnancy does not only bring about visible changes such as weight gain and changes in belly size. During this period, the brain also faces profound changes. Research shows that the volume of gray matter and the thickness of the cerebral cortex decrease in many areas, while the characteristics of white matter increase. In other words, the brain is undergoing 'reorganization', rather than simply 'shrinking'.

Gray matter consists of nerve cells and the connections between them. A reduction in gray matter volume does not mean brain damage; rather, these changes occur due to increased pregnancy hormones, particularly estradiol and progesterone.

Neural Flexibility and Brain Adaptation

The concept of 'neuroplasticity' refers to the brain's ability to change its structure and function in response to new conditions. During pregnancy, the mother's brain is actively changing to prepare for childbirth and caring for the newborn. In this process, some connections are strengthened while others change. These changes are similar to pruning a tree; that is, extra branches are reduced so that the main branches can grow better.

While the volume of gray matter decreases, the microstructural integrity of white matter increases. White matter acts as a network of communication pathways between different parts of the brain. Therefore, the overall picture is not limited to 'reduction', but we are witnessing diverse changes in various parts of the brain.

After childbirth, the volume of gray matter and the thickness of the cerebral cortex gradually return to their previous state. This indicates that the brain does not maintain a static state during pregnancy and is dynamically changing and adapting.

Effects on Cognitive Abilities

The structural changes in the mother's brain during pregnancy are not yet fully understood. These changes may be part of the brain's adaptation to a new stage of life, but it cannot be simply concluded that the mother's cognitive abilities have changed. Some past studies have shown that changes in areas related to social processing and understanding others are observable after pregnancy.

Common forgetfulness or distractions during pregnancy cannot simply be attributed to a reduction in gray matter. The mother's brain is undergoing reconstruction and reorganization due to hormonal changes and new life needs. Therefore, it is better to say that instead of stating that 'the mother's brain is shrinking', we should say that the brain is preparing itself for a new life during pregnancy.
