The cost of the war with Iran has reached approximately $38 billion for the U.S. Department of Defense as of August 1. This figure may increase by another $2 to $3 billion each month due to the intensity of the conflicts.
Details of the Costs
The U.S. Congressional Budget Office has reported that the estimated $38.1 billion includes the cost of replacing missiles and other munitions, replacing equipment lost in battle, increasing military aircraft operations, and rising fuel costs. If the level of conflicts continues at the relatively low levels recorded in May and June, the monthly cost of the war will be about $2 billion. Conversely, if military operations continue with the intensity recorded in July, the monthly cost will rise to about $3 billion.

Economic Consequences of the War
The war has contributed to rising inflation by disrupting oil transport from the Strait of Hormuz and shipping in the Red Sea, increasing energy, transportation, and other goods and services costs. It is estimated that the cost of replacing munitions at $21.7 billion has been the largest portion of the military costs of the war. Of this amount, $13.1 billion has been allocated for replacing interceptor missiles in missile defense, and $7.3 billion for cruise missiles targeting ground objectives.
The Congressional Budget Office also noted that the U.S. military has likely consumed between half to two-thirds of its missile defense interceptor stockpile since June 2025. The reduction in these missile stocks could have significant implications in the event of a potential conflict between the United States and China, as China possesses far more ballistic and cruise missiles than Iran.
Brendan Boyle, a Democratic representative from Pennsylvania, highlighted the human and financial consequences of this war in a statement, saying: "This nonpartisan report from the Congressional Budget Office clearly shows that the war has cost American taxpayers tens of billions of dollars so far, and this figure continues to rise as the cost of living also increases." He added: "Donald Trump and the Republicans have told Americans for years that we cannot afford to help families at home, yet they seem able to find tens of billions of dollars and possibly much more for a reckless war." Trump has also defended the war costs by stating that polls show the benefits of disarming Iran far outweigh the costs of war.
Furthermore, Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that any damages Iran inflicts on ships or cargo will be paid from Iranian funds under U.S. control, and while these damages may be quite significant, this is fair and just.
